Jesse,
What begins with a "T", takes great effort to build and can be lost in a single moment? TRUST.
Trust is one of the most highly valued currencies of life.
It is, without a doubt, more valuable than that filthy fiat currency we're all forced to use today. :) Sorry, I couldn't resist taking shot at weak money.
We all know that trust in others can take awhile to develop. Trust that can take months, years or even decades to develop can be destroyed in a single moment. All that buildup and then POOF, it's gone.
What about trust in ourselves, though? Is it the same or different?
In a lot of ways, it's the same. When we tell ourselves that we are going to do something, and we don't actually do the thing, we are destroying our personal superpower...self-trust.
Most people believe it's a personality trait. Something we either have or we don't. That couldn't be further from the truth.
Self-trust is built by following up on commitments we've made to ourselves.
When we do what we say we're going to do, we create an attitude of "I can do this" to every challenge we encounter. We don't just "talk the talk", we "walk the walk".
When you consistently keep your word, you build an unshakable confidence in yourself. You become willing to take on increasingly more challenging goals and don't let setbacks stop you from achieving those goals.
Self-trust can be destroyed quickly or slowly by repeatedly not following through on what we say we're going to do. Think of self-trust as a Jenga Tower. It's built block by block and can remain standing even though many blocks have been removed. However, at some point, the tower structure can't hold and comes crashing down. Each time we betray our word to ourselves, it's like pulling a block from that Jenga tower. Eventually, we begin to resent our own weakness and lose our confidence in the process.
If you say you're going to start waking up at 5 AM on Monday and when your alarm goes off at 5 AM on Monday you hit the snooze button for 45 minutes, you have betrayed your trust in yourself.
One of my goals for 2026 is to be unshakably disciplined with my word. When I tell myself I'm going to do something I will be following through. Every time. I know I'll slip up a lot but I will be getting back on the saddle and doing better the next time.
We all have dozens of opportunities every day to build self-trust. Carpe diem "seize the day" and start today.
