Arrival Syndrome

Arrival Syndrome

There's one phenomenon that has likely limited the achievements of mankind more than anything else.

Arrival Syndrome!

What is it? Arrival syndrome is what happens to a person when they believe:

1) They already know all there is to know about a topic or issue.
2) They believe they have "arrived" at the destination, goal or level of success.

Arrival syndrome causes you to stop learning and stop growing. It's one reason that goals, once reached, must be replaced by new goals. If you accept that you've reached the "pinnacle" and there's no higher level of achievement possible, you are doomed to slowly decay away.

As with so many things, children understand this instinctually. It's us adults that learn to "restrict" our thinking as we experience life. Look at my son's Elon's face as he looks at the toy train in the photo above. Do you believe he thinks he's "arrived"?

I'm not a huge New Year's resolution guy. I do, however, believe in goal setting. As you enter the Holiday season and begin to think about what you'd like to accomplish in 2024, ask yourself if you've been letting arrival syndrome creep it.

Your goals should make you feel uncomfortable. I believe they should feel borderline or even outright unachievable given your current capacity. They should force you to stretch.

When you accept that we never truly "arrive" and that life is one continuous journey of self-improvement and service to a greater good, you will inoculate yourself from arrival syndrome and achieve more than your current self can possibly imagine.

Cheers to 2023's blessings and challenges and to a 2024 filled with infinite possibilities!
